Vadodara's rate in context

Gujarat's jewellery trade takes its cue from Ahmedabad and Mumbai, and Vadodara's board rate normally sits within a few rupees per gram of both. The underlying cost is national: the dollar gold price converted to rupees, plus 6% customs duty. In Gujarati, gold is sonu, and you will often hear rates quoted per 10 grams, the traditional trade unit, which is why the table has a 10 g row.

Old city and new showrooms

Vadodara's traditional jewellers are concentrated in the old walled city around Mandvi and Raopura, in the lanes near the old city gates and the Nyay Mandir area. Family-run shops there handle bridal orders, repairs and remodelling. Branded showrooms are concentrated in Alkapuri, on Race Course Road and along the city's newer commercial corridors. Prices for the same purity should be close everywhere; differences show up in making charges and offers.

Reading a "50% off making" offer

Festival advertising in Vadodara often promises discounts on making charges. Here is how to check whether an offer really saves money. Suppose (illustrative) you are buying a 40 g 22K set. Shop A's board rate is ₹12,150 per gram and it advertises 16% making with 50% off (effectively 8%). Shop B's rate is ₹12,100 with a plain 10% making:

ItemShop AShop B
Gold: 40 g₹4,86,000₹4,84,000
Making₹38,880 (8%)₹48,400 (10%)
Subtotal₹5,24,880₹5,32,400
GST at 3%₹15,746.40₹15,972
Total₹5,40,626.40₹5,48,372

Here the offer wins by ₹7,745.60 despite the higher gold rate. It can go the other way: if the headline making charge was inflated before the discount, or if the offer applies only to selected designs, the "discount" may be smaller than it looks. Always compare final rupee totals. Our making charges guide covers the common pricing tricks.

Navratri, Diwali and Gujarati weddings

Vadodara's Navratri garba is among the largest in Gujarat, and the nine nights are a time for new clothes and jewellery, though much of what is worn to garba is oxidised silver or fashion jewellery rather than gold. Real gold buying peaks around Dhanteras, the Gujarati New Year and Labh Pancham. Guru Pushya, when the Pushya nakshatra falls on a Thursday, is widely regarded in Gujarat as an auspicious day for gold.

In Gujarati weddings the bride receives gold from both families. Typical pieces include a heavy necklace set, bangles (bangdi), earrings and the mangalsutra, with diamond-set 18K pieces increasingly common alongside 22K.

Gold for Navratri gifting and savings

Families who want gold rather than fashion pieces for festive wear often choose lightweight 22K items: thin chains, small pendants and earrings in the 2 to 8 gram range. These carry higher making charges as a percentage than heavy pieces, because the labour per gram is greater. If the aim is saving rather than wearing, a 24K coin or bar avoids making entirely; compare the premium with making on small jewellery. Coin weights and typical premiums are on the gold coin prices page, and the 22K gold price page explains how the 22K rate is derived from 24K.

Frequently asked questions

Is the gold rate in Vadodara lower than Ahmedabad?
The two are usually within a few rupees per gram. Both draw on the same supply chain, and individual jewellers' pricing matters more than the city.
Why do Gujarati jewellers quote per 10 grams?
10 grams has long been the standard trade unit in Indian bullion markets. Invoices are still in grams; the 10 g figure is simply a convenient reference.
Is buying gold on Guru Pushya cheaper?
No. The gold price follows the international market. Jewellers may run offers on making charges for the day, which you should compare as final totals.
Does GST apply to the discounted making charge?
GST at 3% is charged on the actual invoice value, including the making charge after any discount. See GST on gold.
Is 18K a good choice for wedding jewellery?
For diamond and stone-set pieces, yes, because 18K holds stones securely. For plain gold that you may later exchange or sell, 22K holds more value per gram, since buyers pay on pure gold content.
