Troy ounce vs ordinary ounce
Precious metals use the troy ounce, a unit from the medieval troy weight system that survives only in gold, silver, platinum and palladium trading. It is about 10% heavier than the avoirdupois ounce used for food and postage.
| Unit | Grams | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Troy ounce (oz t) | 31.1035 | Gold and other precious metals |
| Avoirdupois ounce (oz) | 28.3495 | Everyday weights in the US and UK |
| Troy pound | 373.24 (12 oz t) | Historical; not used in modern gold trading |
The difference matters if you weigh gold on a kitchen scale set to ounces. A piece reading 1.00 oz on that scale is only 0.911 troy ounces. Read more in what is a troy ounce, or convert with the gold unit converter.
Price per ounce by karat
An ounce of 22K or 14K gold is worth the 24K ounce price multiplied by its fineness. With an illustrative spot price of $4,150:
| Karat | Calculation | Value per troy ounce |
|---|---|---|
| 24K | spot | $4,150.00 |
| 22K | 4,150 × 0.916 | $3,801.40 |
| 21K | 4,150 × 0.875 | $3,631.25 |
| 18K | 4,150 × 0.75 | $3,112.50 |
| 14K | 4,150 × 0.585 | $2,427.75 |
| 10K | 4,150 × 0.417 | $1,730.55 |
Note that bullion coins are sized by fine gold content, not total weight. A one-ounce 22K Krugerrand weighs about 33.9 grams in total so that it contains a full troy ounce of gold; its melt value is the 24K ounce price, not the 22K figure. See gold coin prices for each coin's melt value.

Why the ounce is the global benchmark
London's wholesale market, COMEX futures in New York and the LBMA Gold Price are all quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. A London Good Delivery bar holds roughly 400 troy ounces, and one COMEX contract is 100 ounces, so the ounce is the natural unit for the professional market. Most of the US, UK, Canada and Australia also quote retail bullion per ounce, while India, the Gulf and much of Asia price jewellery per gram, tola or 10 grams. The gold price per gram page gives the metric equivalents.
Fractional ounces
Bullion coins are also sold in half, quarter and tenth-ounce sizes. Their gold content is a simple fraction of the ounce, but the premium is not: minting a tenth-ounce coin costs almost as much as minting a full ounce, so the mark-up per ounce of gold rises as the coin gets smaller.
| Size | Fine gold (g) | Melt value at $4,150/oz |
|---|---|---|
| 1 oz | 31.10 | $4,150.00 |
| 1/2 oz | 15.55 | $2,075.00 |
| 1/4 oz | 7.78 | $1,037.50 |
| 1/10 oz | 3.11 | $415.00 |

What one ounce costs at retail
A one-ounce coin or bar sells above spot. The premium depends on the product, the dealer, the order size and market conditions; minted coins from national mints usually cost more than cast bars of the same weight. Suppose spot is $4,150 and a dealer charges 3% over spot for a one-ounce bar: you pay $4,274.50. If the dealer's buy-back price is 1% under spot, selling immediately returns $4,108.50, a round-trip cost of $166. Comparing dealers on that round-trip figure, rather than the headline premium alone, gives a truer picture, and it also shows how far gold must rise before a purchase breaks even. US buyers can compare with the gold price in the USA.
