How to use the gold calculator
- Enter the price of 24K gold from the live table above, in the currency you want the answer in.
- Choose what that price is per: gram, 10 grams, troy ounce, tola or kilogram. If you copied a per-gram figure, leave it on gram.
- Enter the weight of your item and pick its unit: grams, troy ounces, tola/vori, sovereign/pavan (8 g), tael/lượng (37.5 g), baht (15.244 g), pennyweight or kilograms.
- Select the purity stamped on the item: 24K, 22K, 21K, 18K, 14K, 10K or 9K.
The result updates as you type. It shows the value, the gross weight in grams, the grams of pure gold and the price per gram at the purity you chose.
The formula
Value = (24K price ÷ grams in the price unit) × (weight × grams in the weight unit) × purity factor
The purity factors are 1.000 (24K), 0.916 (22K), 0.875 (21K), 0.750 (18K), 0.585 (14K), 0.417 (10K) and 0.375 (9K). A troy ounce is 31.1034768 g and a tola 11.6638038 g. The full list of constants is on the methodology page.
Worked examples
Example 1, ounce price, gram weight. Suppose 24K gold is US$4,150 per troy ounce (illustrative) and you have a 25 g bracelet in 18K.
- 24K per gram: 4,150 ÷ 31.1034768 = US$133.43
- Pure gold: 25 g × 0.75 = 18.75 g
- Value: 133.4256 × 18.75 = US$2,501.73
Example 2, tola price, tola weight. Suppose 24K gold is PKR 435,000 per tola (illustrative) and you have 2 tola of 22K jewellery. The tola conversions cancel out, so the value is 435,000 × 2 × 0.916 = PKR 796,920.
Reading the result
- The figure is the metal value at the price you entered. A shop selling you the same item will add making charges, tax and margin; a buyer will pay less than this figure.
- Weigh only the gold. Stones, enamel, lac and beads should be deducted from the weight first.
- The table shows international parity. In India, use the duty-inclusive rupee row or your jeweller's rate; in Pakistan or the Gulf, the local market rate may sit slightly above parity.
- For US-made 14K (58.3% rather than 58.5%), the true value is about 0.34% lower than the 14K result. See 14K gold price.
