Worked examples
- Tola to ounces: 11.6638038 ÷ 31.1034768 = 0.375, so one tola is exactly three-eighths of a troy ounce, and one troy ounce is 2.66667 tola. A 10-tola bar contains 3.75 oz.
- Kilogram to ounces and tola: 1,000 ÷ 31.1034768 = 32.15075 oz; 1,000 ÷ 11.6638038 = 85.73532 tola.
- Ounce to pennyweight: 31.1034768 ÷ 1.55517384 = 20, so 20 dwt make one troy ounce.
- Troy versus kitchen ounce: 28.349523125 ÷ 31.1034768 = 0.91146, so a kitchen-scale ounce is about 8.9% lighter than a troy ounce. Weighing gold on a kitchen scale set to ounces understates its value.
- Baht to tola: 15.244 ÷ 11.6638038 = 1.30695 tola, but remember a Thai baht of gold is 96.5% pure.

Indian jewellers quote per gram and per 10 grams; Kerala and Tamil Nadu buyers often think in pavan; Pakistani and Nepali markets quote per tola; Vietnamese prices are per lượng; US scrap buyers use pennyweight.
Tips
- The converter changes weight, not value. To price a weight, use the gold calculator, which accepts all these units.
- "Carat" with a C is gemstone weight; "karat" (K) is gold purity. Converting 18 carats gives 3.6 g, which has nothing to do with 18K gold.
- The 8 g sovereign/pavan is the jewellery trade unit. The British sovereign coin weighs slightly less, 7.98805 g.
