Gold Price News
The feed below streams the latest gold market headlines as they publish. Most of them trace back to a short list of drivers: US interest-rate expectations, inflation and jobs data, the dollar, real bond yields, central-bank buying, ETF flows and geopolitical risk. The guide after the feed explains which ones matter and how to read them.
Gold and the markets that move it

What to watch
| Driver | When | Typical effect on gold |
|---|---|---|
| Federal Reserve (FOMC) decision | Eight scheduled meetings a year, 2:00 p.m. New York | Rate cuts or a softer outlook support gold; hawkish surprises weigh on it |
| US CPI inflation | Monthly, 8:30 a.m. New York | A hot print lifts rate expectations and often hits gold short term |
| US jobs report (NFP) | Usually first Friday, 8:30 a.m. New York | Strong jobs tend to push gold down, weak jobs up |
| US dollar index (DXY) | Continuous | A weaker dollar usually lifts gold |
| Real yields (inflation-protected Treasury yields) | Continuous | Falling real yields reduce the cost of holding gold |
| Central-bank purchases | Monthly reserve data; quarterly World Gold Council reports | Steady buying supports the price over months |
| Gold ETF holdings | Published daily by large funds | Inflows signal investor demand; outflows the reverse |
| Geopolitical events | Unscheduled | Safe-haven buying, often partly reversed later |
| Indian and Chinese demand | Festivals, wedding seasons, import data, duty changes | Affects local premiums more than the global price |
Interest rates and the Fed
Gold pays no interest, so its main competitor is a safe bond that does. When the market expects the Federal Reserve to cut rates, the opportunity cost of holding gold falls and the price tends to rise. That is why gold often moves more on a change in expected rates than on the decision itself, which is usually anticipated. Watch the statement, the projections released at four of the eight meetings, and the chair's press conference.
Inflation and jobs data
CPI and payrolls matter because they shift those rate expectations. What moves gold is the surprise against the consensus forecast, not the headline number. A CPI print of 0.3% when 0.2% was expected can knock gold down within seconds, even though 0.3% is not alarming in itself. The first move after a release often reverses as traders read the details, so wait before drawing conclusions. Watch the reaction on the 15-minute chart on the live gold price page.
The dollar and real yields
Because gold is priced in dollars, a weaker dollar makes it cheaper for buyers using other currencies and usually lifts the dollar price. Real yields (bond yields minus expected inflation, best seen in inflation-protected Treasury yields) have historically been one of the strongest single influences on gold. The relationship weakened after 2022, when central-bank buying kept gold rising despite higher real yields, a reminder that no single driver works all the time.
Central banks, ETFs and positioning
Central banks, led by emerging-market buyers, have been adding gold to reserves at an unusually fast pace since 2022, according to World Gold Council data. That buying is slow and steady and does not react to daily news, which helps explain why dips have been bought. ETF flows are the clearest gauge of Western investor demand. Futures positioning, published weekly by the US CFTC in the Commitments of Traders report, shows whether speculators are already heavily long, which can make the market vulnerable to sharp pullbacks. Reading gold headlines critically
- Check the percentage move. A "$40 plunge" is about 1% with gold near $4,150, a normal day.
- Check the currency. Gold can hit a record in rupees or yen while the dollar price is below its high.
- Separate cause from commentary. Many headlines attach a reason after the fact.
- Ignore forecasts presented as news. No one reliably predicts short-term gold moves.
