Indicative rate = live international gold price in rupees (TradingView FX_IDC:XAUINRG) plus India's 6% import duty, before 3% GST and making charges. A jeweller's board rate can sit slightly above or below it. How we calculate
One state, one daily rate
Kerala is unusual: rather than each city or shop setting its own board, a state-wide 22K rate per gram and per pavan is announced each morning by a jewellers' trade body, and most jewellers from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram follow it. On days when the international market moves sharply, the rate may be revised during the day. The announced rate rests on the same inputs as anywhere in India: international price × USD/INR + 6% customs duty, with the bullion premium or discount.
Prices are quoted per pavan (8 g) and per gram. Kerala households discuss gold almost entirely in pavan: a bride's gold is "40 pavan", a chain is "2 pavan".
Why gold matters so much in Kerala
Kerala has one of the highest levels of gold consumption per person in India. Remittances from Keralites working in the Gulf have long supported demand, and families of all three major communities give substantial gold at weddings. Gold is also widely used as collateral: gold loans from banks, cooperatives and NBFCs are a routine source of credit in the state.
City by city
Thrissur
Thrissur is often called Kerala's gold capital. It is a major jewellery manufacturing centre, with thousands of goldsmiths and workshops supplying showrooms across the state and beyond. Several of Kerala's large jewellery chains started here, and showrooms cluster around the Swaraj Round encircling the Vadakkunnathan temple.
Kochi
Ernakulam's MG Road and Broadway area hold large multi-storey showrooms alongside smaller family jewellers. Kochi is the main commercial centre and has the widest choice of designs.
Kozhikode
Kozhikode has a long trading history and a busy jewellery trade serving Malabar families, with large showrooms in the city centre. Malabar Muslim bridal gold includes distinctive necklaces and heavy bangle sets.
Thiruvananthapuram
The capital's traditional market area around Chalai and East Fort has old family jewellers, while chains have showrooms on MG Road and in the newer commercial areas.
Kerala ornaments
- Palakka mala: a necklace of green-stone (palakka) pendants framed in gold.
- Kasu mala: a coin necklace, usually with Lakshmi coins.
- Mullamottu mala: a necklace of jasmine-bud shaped beads.
- Nagapadam: a pendant shaped like a cobra's hood.
- Thali for Hindu brides and minnu, the small pendant tied at Christian weddings.
Example: a 5-pavan necklace with 9% VA
Suppose the announced 22K rate is ₹12,150 per gram, which is ₹97,200 per pavan (illustrative). Many Kerala showrooms combine wastage and making into a single value-added charge:
| Line | Working | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | 5 pavan = 40 g × ₹12,150 | ₹4,86,000 |
| VA (wastage + making) | 9% of ₹4,86,000 | ₹43,740 |
| Taxable value | ₹5,29,740 | |
| GST | 3% | ₹15,892.20 |
| Total | ₹5,45,632.20 |
Some shops quote a "minimum wastage" percentage and charge making separately; others advertise a flat low VA on plain designs. Compare like with like using the jewellery price calculator and the making charges guide.
Festival and wedding demand
Vishu, the Malayali new year, is a buying occasion, and gold ornaments are placed in the Vishukkani arrangement seen first on Vishu morning. Onam, Akshaya Tritiya (which has grown in popularity in Kerala) and the wedding season bring peaks, with weddings generally avoided in the Karkidakam month and resuming strongly in Chingam. Gulf-based families often buy during visits home.
Kerala buyer checklist
- Check the morning's announced pavan rate before you go, and confirm the shop uses it.
- Confirm BIS hallmark and HUID on each piece (verify here).
- Ask whether VA is one figure or wastage plus making, and get it in writing.
- For palakka and stone-set pieces, ask for net gold weight.
- Keep invoices for future exchange, sale or gold loans.
