Indicative rate = live international gold price in rupees (TradingView FX_IDC:XAUINRG) plus India's 6% import duty, before 3% GST and making charges. A jeweller's board rate can sit slightly above or below it. How we calculate

Indore: Madhya Pradesh's main bullion market

Indore is the commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh, and its bullion dealers supply jewellers across Malwa and beyond. The local rate is the national landed price (international gold in rupees plus 6% customs duty) plus the dealer and jeweller margins, and it normally stays close to Mumbai and Delhi. The table here is the reference figure without local margins; use it to judge whether a board rate is reasonable.

Sarafa Bazaar by day and by night

Indore's Sarafa Bazaar, in the old city near Rajwada, is the traditional jewellers' and bullion market. By day the lanes are full of gold and silver shops; after the jewellers close in the evening, the same street turns into one of India's best-known night food markets, with stalls setting up in front of the shuttered shops. For buying gold, go during business hours, when you can compare several jewellers on one street. Branded chain showrooms are spread across the newer parts of the city, including the main roads around Vijay Nagar and AB Road.

Next to Sarafa, the Rajwada area and its surrounding markets sell bridal clothing and accessories, so wedding shopping in Indore often covers the whole old-city area in one trip.

Gross weight versus net weight

The most expensive mistake in buying studded or beaded jewellery is paying the gold rate on stones. Suppose (illustrative) you buy a 22K necklace that weighs 35 g in total, of which 5 g is stones and beads. The 22K rate is ₹12,220 per gram, the stones are priced separately at ₹8,000, and making is 12% of the gold value:

ItemCalculationAmount
Gold (net weight)30 g × ₹12,220₹3,66,600
Stones and beadspriced separately₹8,000
Making12% of ₹3,66,600₹43,992
Subtotal₹4,18,592
GST3% of ₹4,18,592₹12,557.76
Total₹4,31,149.76

If the same 5 g of stones were billed as gold, the gold line would rise by ₹61,100 (5 g × ₹12,220), and with 12% making on top, by ₹68,432 before GST. Reputable jewellers print gross weight, stone weight and net weight on the tag and invoice; ask for all three. When you later sell, only the net gold weight counts. Try the numbers in the jewellery price calculator.

Malwa buying patterns

Indore's jewellery demand mixes 22K bridal sets, silver (the city has a large silver trade as well), and investment coins and bars. Dhanteras and Diwali are the biggest days, with Akshaya Tritiya and the winter wedding season close behind. The city's trading community also buys on Pushya nakshatra days. Silver anklets, toe rings and utensils are often bought with gold on Dhanteras.

Indore, Bhopal and the smaller towns

Buyers from Ujjain, Dewas, Dhar and other Malwa towns often come to Indore for wedding jewellery because of the range on offer, while day-to-day purchases happen locally. The gold rate across these towns is essentially the same; what differs is design choice and how much room jewellers leave on making charges. If you buy in Indore and live elsewhere, check whether the jeweller's buy-back or exchange offer is honoured only at the original store or at any branch of the chain. For the state capital, see the Bhopal gold rate.

Frequently asked questions

Is the gold rate in Indore the same as Bhopal?
Very close. Both draw on the same wholesale supply, and Indore's bullion market sets much of the tone for Madhya Pradesh.
Can I buy gold at Sarafa Bazaar at night?
The jewellery shops close in the evening before the food stalls set up. Visit during the day if you want to buy or compare gold, and allow time to get quotes from more than one shop.
Should making charge be calculated on gross or net weight?
On net gold weight. Stones and beads should be priced separately and should never attract the gold rate or a percentage making charge based on it.
Is GST charged on stones in jewellery?
Yes. The whole invoice for a finished piece, including stones and making, attracts 3% GST. See GST on gold.
Why is Indore a major bullion centre?
It is the largest commercial city in Madhya Pradesh, and its traders have long supplied jewellers across the Malwa region and neighbouring states.
