Live gold in Canadian dollars (TradingView FX_IDC:XAUCAD) scaled by weight and purity. Values are the live international spot price converted at the live exchange rate and scaled by weight and purity. They exclude dealer premiums, local market premiums or discounts, taxes and making charges. How we calculate
How the Canadian gold price is formed
Canada has no separate gold market price: dealers take the international spot price in US dollars and convert it at the USD/CAD rate. When the Canadian dollar weakens against the US dollar, gold gets more expensive for Canadians even if the dollar price is unchanged, and the reverse also holds. That is why the CAD chart above and the US dollar chart on our USA page do not move in step.
Canada is also a major gold producer, and the Royal Canadian Mint refines gold and strikes the Gold Maple Leaf. Domestic production does not lower the retail price, since miners sell at world prices, but it does mean Maple Leafs and Mint bars are widely available and carry relatively low premiums at home.
The Gold Maple Leaf and other products
| Product | Purity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gold Maple Leaf (1 oz) | 99.99% | Legal tender with a $50 face value; anti-counterfeiting security marks on the coin |
| Fractional Maple Leafs | 99.99% | 1/2, 1/4, 1/10 oz and smaller; higher premium per gram |
| Royal Canadian Mint bars | 99.99% | From 1 g up to 1 kg |
| Jewellery | 41.7–75% | 10K and 14K most common, 18K for fine pieces |
The face value of a Maple Leaf is symbolic; the coin trades on its gold content. Compare coin prices on our gold coin prices page.
GST/HST and tax on gains
Investment gold of at least 99.5% purity, in bar, wafer or coin form, is not subject to GST/HST when sold in Canada. This covers Maple Leafs and most bullion bars. Gold jewellery and gold below that purity are taxable at the GST or HST rate of the province, for example 13% HST in Ontario.
Profits on gold held as an investment are generally taxed as capital gains; frequent trading can instead be treated as business income. Keep purchase records, and check with the Canada Revenue Agency or an accountant for your case.
Worked example
Illustrative only. Suppose gold is C$5,727.00 per ounce, or C$184.13 per gram.
| Item | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| 1 oz Maple Leaf at 4% over spot | C$5,727.00 × 1.04 | C$5,956.08 |
| GST/HST on the coin (99.99% pure) | not taxable | C$0.00 |
| Melt value of a 5 g 10K ring | 5 × C$184.13 × 0.417 | C$383.91 |
| 1/4 oz Maple Leaf at 6% over spot | 0.25 × C$5,727.00 × 1.06 | C$1,517.66 |
The quarter-ounce coin carries a higher premium per ounce than the full ounce, which is typical of fractional coins. Try your own numbers in the gold calculator.
Where Canadians buy gold
Options include established bullion dealers with storefronts in larger cities and online ordering, the Royal Canadian Mint's own boutiques and online store and, to a limited extent, bank branches that stock Maple Leafs. Jewellers sell mostly 10K and 14K pieces; South Asian and Chinese jewellers in the Toronto and Vancouver areas also sell 22K and 24K gold priced by weight.
Tips
- Compare premiums in CAD per ounce, and ask for the dealer's buy-back price on the same product.
- Make sure investment purchases meet the 99.5% purity line if you expect them to be tax-free.
- For jewellery, look for the quality mark (such as 10K or 417) alongside the maker's trademark.
- Factor in shipping, insurance and storage if you buy online.
