Live gold in lira per gram (TradingView FX_IDC:XAUTRYG) × weight × purity. Coin rows show gold content only; shops add a workmanship premium. International parity: the live world gold price converted at the current exchange rate, scaled by weight and purity. It excludes local dealer premiums, taxes and making charges. How we calculate
Why gold in lira behaves differently
Turkish households hold large amounts of gold, much of it outside the banking system as coins and bracelets, the so-called yastık altı ("under the pillow") gold. The reason is visible in the chart above: over the long run the Turkish lira has lost a large share of its value against the dollar, so gold priced in lira has risen far faster than gold priced in dollars. For a Turkish saver, gold is a hedge against the currency as much as an investment in the metal.
The lira price of a gram of gold is the dollar price per gram multiplied by the USD/TRY rate. On days when the lira weakens sharply, gram altın can jump even if world gold is flat. The reverse is also true: a stable lira and falling world gold together lower the local price.
Gram altın, coins and bracelets
| Product | Purity | Approx. weight | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gram altın | 24K (995 or 999.9) | 1 g, also 5–100 g bars | Savings, gifts |
| Çeyrek altın (quarter) | 22K | 1.75 g | Wedding and birth gifts |
| Yarım altın (half) | 22K | 3.5 g | Gifts, savings |
| Tam altın (full) | 22K | about 7.0 g | Gifts, savings |
| Cumhuriyet altını (Ata) | 22K | about 7.2 g | Savings, larger gifts |
| Bilezik (bracelets) | 22K | by weight | Bridal gold, savings |
The coins are struck by the Turkish State Mint (Darphane). The çeyrek is the most traded and the traditional gift pinned on a couple at a wedding. Jewellery comes mainly in 22K for bracelets and in 14K for everyday pieces, while has altın refers to pure 24K gold in market quotes.
Where people buy and sell
Istanbul's Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) is the historic centre of the gold trade, and its wholesalers' quotes are followed across the country. Every town has a kuyumcu street where jewellers publish buy (alış) and sell (satış) prices for gram gold, çeyrek and the other coins. Banks offer gold accounts in grams and, at some branches, physical bars; Borsa Istanbul runs the organised precious metals market used by banks and dealers.
Coins and bracelets are easy to sell back because their weight and purity are standard. Newly minted coins usually fetch a slightly higher price than older, worn ones, and shops may quote "eski" (old) and "yeni" (new) prices separately.
Worked example (illustrative)
Suppose gram altın parity is ₺5,600 per gram and a jeweller sells a new çeyrek at ₺9,300:
| Item | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Fine gold in a çeyrek | 1.75 g × 91.6% | 1.603 g |
| Gold value at parity | 1.603 g × ₺5,600 | ₺8,976.80 |
| Price asked | jeweller's satış | ₺9,300.00 |
| Premium over gold value | ₺9,300 − ₺8,976.80 | ₺323.20 (≈ 3.6%) |
These figures are examples only. The premium covers minting and the dealer's margin. Gram bars of 10 g or more usually carry a smaller premium per gram than coins, which is why savers who do not need a gift often prefer them.
Tips
- Compare alış and satış at two or three jewellers; the spread differs more than the gold price.
- Keep coins in their sealed packaging; damaged coins sell at a discount.
- For bracelets, ask for the weight and the workmanship (işçilik) separately.
- Remember that a gain in lira terms may mostly reflect the currency, not the metal.
