US 14K (58.3%) vs 585 (58.5%)
14 ÷ 24 is 58.33%, and that is the purity US jewelry stamped "14K" is made to: about 58.3% gold. Europe, the UK and India instead hallmark the grade as 585, a minimum of 58.5% gold, a small margin above the fraction. US federal stamping law also allows a small manufacturing tolerance below the marked karat, so a US 14K piece can assay slightly under 58.3%.
This site prices 14K at 0.585. For US-made 14K the gold content is 0.2 percentage points lower, which reduces the metal value by about 0.34% (0.583 ÷ 0.585 = 0.9966). On a gram of 14K that is a fraction of a dollar, but a buyer purchasing scrap in bulk will notice it.
14K gold price per gram
To get 1 gram of 14K gold from the 24K price, multiply by 0.585 (or 0.583 for US 14K). US jewelers and refiners often quote per pennyweight (dwt, 1.555 g); 20 dwt make a troy ounce. Both figures are in the table above.

Marks to look for
- US: 14K, 14KT or 14 kt, alongside a registered maker's trademark, which federal law requires when a karat mark is applied.
- Europe and UK: 585 within a hallmark.
- India: BIS logo, 14K585 and a HUID code.
- Be careful with 14K GF (gold-filled), 14K GP or GEP (gold-plated) and 14K HGE (heavy gold electroplate). These are base metal with a gold layer, worth very little as gold.
Colour, alloy and durability
With about 41.5% alloy, 14K is markedly harder and more scratch-resistant than 18K or 22K, so it is the practical choice for rings worn every day, chains and clasps. Its yellow is paler than higher karats. 14K white gold is usually rhodium-plated, and 14K rose gold has a stronger pink than 18K rose because the copper share is higher. Some people with nickel allergy react to 14K white gold made with nickel.
Where 14K is common
14K is the best-selling karat for engagement rings and everyday jewelry in the United States and Canada, and is widely used in Germany, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Russia (where the equivalent 583 or 585 standard is traditional). India includes 14K among its BIS hallmarking grades, used for lighter, lower-cost jewellery. See gold price in the USA for American market context.
How to price 1 gram of 14K gold today: worked example
Suppose 24K gold is US$133.00 per gram (illustrative), and you want the gold value of a 12 g chain.
| Step | 585 (Europe/India) | 583 (US 14K) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 gram of 14K | $133.00 × 0.585 = $77.805 | $133.00 × 0.583 = $77.539 |
| 12 g chain, metal value | 12 × $77.805 = $933.66 | 12 × $77.539 = $930.47 |
| Per pennyweight | $77.805 × 1.55517 = $121.00 | $77.539 × 1.55517 = $120.59 |
Retail 14K jewelry is typically priced well above this metal value, because design, labour, retail margin and sales tax are added. Value your own pieces with the gold calculator (choose 14K).
Resale considerations
When you sell 14K, buyers pay for the gold content only and test it first; a piece stamped 14K but made to the US standard will be valued at about 58.3%. Pawn shops and mail-in buyers usually offer a lower share of melt than refiners or established bullion dealers, so get two or three quotes. The scrap gold calculator estimates the offer at any payout percentage, and how to sell gold covers testing and ID requirements.
