Gold Price Today in 2026
The live table shows today's gold price in US dollars and the indicative Indian rate, and the 12-month charts show how 2026 has unfolded so far. Gold entered 2026 after a record-breaking 2025 in which it crossed both $3,000 and $4,000 an ounce, and the forces behind that run are the ones to watch now.

The structural drivers
Central-bank buying
Central banks bought more than 1,000 tonnes of gold a year in 2022, 2023 and 2024, according to the World Gold Council, roughly double the pace of the previous decade, and kept buying heavily in 2025. The buyers are mostly emerging-market banks diversifying away from dollar assets, a shift that accelerated after Western sanctions froze Russia's reserves in 2022. Because this demand is price-insensitive and planned over years, it acts as a floor under dips. Quarterly World Gold Council reports and monthly reserve data from banks such as the People's Bank of China show whether it continues. See central banks and gold.
The interest-rate cycle
The US Federal Reserve began cutting rates in September 2024 and resumed cuts in 2025. Lower rates reduce the cost of holding gold, which pays no yield. The question for 2026 is how far the cycle goes: a market that expects more cuts tends to support gold, while signs of sticky inflation that delay cuts tend to weigh on it.
The US dollar
The dollar weakened in 2025, which helped gold in dollar terms. A further slide would be supportive; a dollar rebound would be a headwind for the dollar price, though not necessarily for gold in rupees if the rupee weakens too.
Investor demand and ETFs
Western investors were net sellers of gold ETFs for much of 2021–2023, began returning in the second half of 2024 and bought heavily in 2025. ETF holdings are published daily and are the quickest read on whether investment demand is still growing.
Geopolitical and policy risk
Trade tariffs, conflicts and concerns over government debt levels all added safe-haven demand in 2025. These effects are hard to time and can unwind quickly, so it pays to check whether a spike in the price is backed by the slower drivers above.
Scenarios, not forecasts
No one can say where gold will close in 2026, and figures quoted in headlines are opinions. It is more useful to know what would move the price either way:
| Supportive for gold | Negative for gold |
|---|---|
| Faster or deeper Fed rate cuts | Inflation that keeps rates higher for longer |
| Weaker US dollar | Strong dollar rebound |
| Continued central-bank buying | Central banks pausing or selling |
| ETF inflows, rising financial stress | ETF outflows as risk appetite returns |
| New geopolitical or trade shocks | Easing tensions, profit-taking after a long rally |
After big rallies gold has historically been prone to sharp pullbacks, even within longer uptrends. That is worth remembering before buying in a rush after a headline record.
For Indian buyers
The Indian gold rate depends on three things: the dollar price, the rupee-dollar exchange rate and the 6% import duty in place since the July 2024 budget. When the rupee weakens, Indian gold rises even if the dollar price is flat, which is why rupee gold has climbed faster than dollar gold over recent years. Compare the two 12-month charts above to see how much of this year's move came from the rupee.
A worked example: suppose the international rate is ₹12,600 per gram (illustrative). With 6% duty, 24K is ₹13,356 per gram and 22K is ₹12,234 per gram (13,356 × 0.916). Ten grams of 22K is then ₹1,22,341, before 3% GST and making charges. Watch the Union Budget for any duty change, and remember that festival demand around Dhanteras and Diwali affects jewellers' offers more than the underlying price.
