The table below gives today's gold rate in Pune per gram and per 10 grams for 24K, 22K and 18K gold, live from the international market in rupees plus 6% import duty. Pune jewellers add 3% GST and a making charge to arrive at the price you pay.
Live gold rate in Pune (INR)
| Weight & purity | Price (INR) |
|---|---|
| 24K gold · 1 gram | live |
| 24K gold · 10 grams | live |
| 22K gold · 1 gram | live |
| 22K gold · 10 grams | live |
| 18K gold · 1 gram | live |
| 18K gold · 10 grams | live |
Indicative rate = live international gold price in rupees (TradingView FX_IDC:XAUINRG) plus India's 6% import duty, before 3% GST and making charges. A jeweller's board rate can sit slightly above or below it. How we calculate
Pune's rate and Mumbai's
Pune sits about 150 km from Mumbai, the country's main bullion hub, and its jewellers' board rates generally follow Mumbai's closely. The underlying calculation is the national one: international price × USD/INR + 6% customs duty, plus or minus the dealer premium. Pune shops commonly display 24K and 22K rates per 10 grams, with the per-gram figure used for billing.
Laxmi Road and the peths
Laxmi Road, running through the old city's peths, is Pune's traditional jewellery street. Long-established Maharashtrian family jewellers sit beside chain showrooms, and the surrounding lanes of Raviwar, Budhwar and Shukrawar Peth, near Tulshibaug, have goldsmiths and smaller traders. Outside the old city, showrooms cluster on FC Road, in Kothrud, Aundh, Camp, Hadapsar, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Wakad, serving the newer residential belts.
Old-city shops are often family businesses spanning several generations, with regular customers who buy from the same jeweller for weddings, naming ceremonies and festivals.
Coin or jewellery? What ₹1 lakh buys
Pune has many first-time buyers saving in gold. A common question is whether to buy a 24K coin or a 22K ornament. Suppose (illustrative) the 24K rate is ₹13,360 per gram and 22K is ₹12,240 per gram:
| 24K coin | 22K ring | |
|---|---|---|
| Rate per gram | ₹13,360 | ₹12,240 |
| Making charge | none assumed | 12% → ₹13,708.80 |
| With 3% GST, per gram | ₹13,760.80 | ₹14,120.06 |
| Weight for ₹1,00,000 | 7.27 g | 7.08 g |
| Pure gold content | ≈ 7.27 g | 6.49 g (91.6%) |
The coin delivers about 12% more pure gold for the money in this example. The ring is wearable, and when exchanged at the same jeweller it may get a better rate than when sold, but the making charge is not recovered. Coins are sold in fixed weights, so in practice you would choose the nearest size. See gold coin prices and gold ETF vs physical gold for other routes.
Maharashtrian gold in Pune
- Mangalsutra with two vati (small cups) on black beads, the classic Marathi design.
- Thushi and Kolhapuri saaj, both popular wedding necklaces.
- Nath: the pearl-set Maharashtrian nose ring, worn at weddings and festivals.
- Tanmani: a pearl-and-gold necklace with a central pendant.
- Bormal and putli haar: necklaces of gold beads and of small gold coins.
Pune's jewellers are known for these Peshwa-era inspired designs, and many families commission them in 22K.
Gudi Padwa, Dasara and Padwa
Gudi Padwa (Marathi new year), Akshaya Tritiya, Dasara and Diwali Padwa are the main gold-buying days in Pune. On Diwali Padwa, husbands traditionally give their wives a gift, often jewellery. Many families also buy on Guru Pushya days, when the Pushya nakshatra falls on a Thursday, which are considered auspicious. Expect booking offers and making-charge discounts; the gold rate follows the market regardless.
Before buying in Pune
- Check the hallmark: BIS logo, purity grade and six-character HUID (how to verify).
- Ask whether the displayed rate includes GST; old-city boards sometimes show it excluding.
- For a pearl-set nath or tanmani, get pearl and gold weights listed separately.
- Compare making charges as rupees per gram and as a percentage to see which is lower for your piece.
- Keep the invoice for exchange, sale or capital gains records.
If you are buying for a wedding, many Pune jewellers accept advance bookings that lock the gold rate on the booking day for a deposit. Ask what portion of the rate is locked, how long the booking lasts, and whether you can cancel and get the deposit back.
