How Patna jewellers arrive at their board rate

Bihar has no import hub of its own, so gold reaches Patna from wholesalers who buy from banks and nominated agencies at the national landed price. The city's board rate is that price plus freight, insurance and the wholesale and retail margins. The result normally sits close to Kolkata, Lucknow and Delhi. When international prices move sharply, larger showrooms may revise their rate during the day while smaller shops update less often, which is one reason two jewellers on the same street can quote different numbers.

Where people buy

Bakarganj, near the old commercial heart of the city, is Patna's best-known traditional jewellery market, with long-established family firms and goldsmiths who also take custom and repair orders. Branded showrooms have opened along the city's main commercial roads, and national chains compete hard on making charges and exchange offers. Traditional shops often allow more room to negotiate; chains tend to offer clearer buy-back policies. Get both in writing, and ask whether the shop's rate is updated during the day.

Exchanging old gold: a worked example

A large share of wedding jewellery in Bihar is paid for partly with the family's old gold. Here is how a typical exchange works, using illustrative numbers: your old 22K jewellery weighs 30 g, the jeweller credits it at the day's 22K rate of ₹12,200 per gram minus a 3% deduction, and you buy a new 32 g set with 10% making.

StepCalculationAmount
Old gold value30 g × ₹12,200₹3,66,000
Exchange deduction3% of ₹3,66,000−₹10,980
Credit for old gold₹3,55,020
New set: gold32 g × ₹12,200₹3,90,400
New set: making10% of gold value₹39,040
GST3% of ₹4,29,440₹12,883.20
New set total₹4,42,323.20
Balance to pay₹4,42,323.20 − ₹3,55,020₹87,303.20

The deduction is where exchanges differ most. Some jewellers deduct nothing on their own hallmarked pieces, some deduct a few percent, and some test the purity first and pay on the measured fineness. Unhallmarked old jewellery is often found to be below 22K, which lowers the credit. Ask for the purity test result and the deduction on paper before you agree. More on this in how to sell gold.

Wedding and festival demand in Bihar

Dhanteras is one of the biggest gold-buying days in Patna, with coins, small ornaments and utensils bought for the occasion. Akshaya Tritiya is also observed. Bihari weddings bring the largest purchases: the tilak ceremony, the wedding itself and gifts from relatives all involve gold, typically 22K necklaces, bangles, earrings and the mangtika. During Chhath, the region's major festival, spending goes more to the rituals than to jewellery. The Dhanteras guide covers coins versus jewellery on that day.

Practical checklist

  • Insist on BIS hallmarked jewellery with a six-character HUID, and check the HUID in the BIS CARE app.
  • Before an exchange, weigh your old gold at home on an accurate scale and ask for a purity test (an XRF reading takes a few minutes and does not damage the piece).
  • Compare making charges in rupees, not just percentages, across at least two shops.
  • Pay by traceable means and keep the GST invoice; you will need it when you sell or claim insurance.
  • Ask whether lac or wax filling in hollow bangles is included in the weight.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the gold rate in Patna sometimes higher than in Delhi?
Gold has to be transported to Patna and passes through more hands before reaching retail. The extra cost is usually small, but it can add a few rupees per gram. Read why gold rates differ by city.
How much do Patna jewellers deduct when exchanging old gold?
It varies by jeweller and by whether the piece is hallmarked. Expect anything from no deduction on the jeweller's own hallmarked pieces to several percent on unhallmarked gold. Always ask for the purity reading and deduction before you agree.
Is GST charged on the old gold I exchange?
You do not pay GST when you hand over your old jewellery. GST at 3% is charged on the invoice for the new piece you buy, as in the example above.
Is 22K or 24K better for a Bihar wedding set?
22K is the standard for jewellery because 24K is too soft to hold shape. 24K is bought as coins and bars, often on Dhanteras.
How can I check if a jeweller's rate is fair?
Compare the board rate with the indicative figure in the table above. If it is close, focus on the making charge, wastage and buy-back terms, which affect the final price more.
