How Mysuru's rate relates to Bengaluru
Mysuru's jewellers take their bullion mainly from Bengaluru wholesalers, so the city's board rate moves with Bengaluru's and usually differs by only a few rupees per gram. Both start from the national landed price: the international price in rupees plus 6% customs duty. The live table shows that reference figure; a shop's board rate includes its own margin on top.
In Kannada, gold is chinna (also bangara), and older customers still count wedding gold in sovereigns or pavan of 8 grams, which is why the table has an 8-gram row.
Where to buy in Mysuru
The older commercial streets around Sayyaji Rao Road and the lanes near Devaraja Market hold many long-established jewellers, some of them several generations old, alongside silk and sandalwood shops. Branded chain showrooms are spread along the main roads in newer parts of the city. Mysuru is a smaller market than Bengaluru, and many families have a long-standing relationship with one jeweller, which helps when you want old pieces remodelled.
Dasara, Varamahalakshmi and weddings
Mysuru Dasara is the city's signature festival, and Vijayadashami is considered auspicious for new purchases across Karnataka. Varamahalakshmi Vratha, observed by many Kannada households in the month of Shravana, is another occasion when women buy gold or a coin with a Lakshmi image. Ugadi, Akshaya Tritiya and Deepavali complete the calendar. Wedding sets commonly include the mangalya (thali) on a gold chain, the kasina sara (coin necklace), vaddanam (waist belt) and long haara necklaces.
Why purity matters more than the rate
Buyers often haggle over ₹20 or ₹30 a gram on the board rate while ignoring purity, which can matter far more. Consider an illustrative case: you buy 20 g sold as 22K at ₹12,250 per gram, paying ₹2,45,000 for the gold. If the piece is actually 20K (83.3% pure) rather than 22K (91.6%), the difference in pure gold is:
| Purity | Calculation | Pure gold |
|---|---|---|
| 22K (91.6%) | 20 g × 0.916 | 18.32 g |
| 20K (83.3%) | 20 g × 0.833 | 16.66 g |
| Shortfall | 1.66 g |
At an illustrative 24K rate of ₹13,400 per gram, 1.66 g of pure gold is worth ₹22,244. That loss dwarfs any saving on the board rate, and you would discover it only when you sell or exchange the piece. This is why the BIS hallmark with an HUID, which records the purity tested at an assaying centre, is the single most important check. Read what 916 gold means and how to check gold purity.
Value addition instead of making charge
Many Karnataka jewellers quote VA (value addition), a percentage added to the gold value that covers both wastage and labour, instead of a separate making charge. A plain 8 g chain might carry a modest VA, while an intricate temple-style haara can carry much more. Compare the total in rupees, and see making charges explained.
Remodelling family gold
Many Mysuru families hold heirloom pieces in older designs and have them melted and remade for a new wedding. You will lose a little weight in melting, and the jeweller will charge VA or making on the new piece. Ask for the old gold to be weighed and tested in front of you, and for the credited weight, purity and the new piece's weight to appear on paper before work starts.
