Madurai follows the Tamil Nadu rate

Madurai's jewellers follow the daily Tamil Nadu rate, which is derived from the national landed price: international gold in rupees plus 6% customs duty, with the bullion premium or discount. The board shows 22K per gram and per sovereign, and 24K for coins. Day-to-day differences from Chennai are normally small.

As the largest city of southern Tamil Nadu, Madurai is also the wedding-shopping centre for families from Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts, many of whom come for a single day's shopping for gold and silk.

Around the Meenakshi Amman temple

The old city is laid out in concentric streets around the Meenakshi Amman temple, and jewellery shops are concentrated in the streets ringing it, alongside silk and textile shops. Many are family businesses that make thaali and traditional pieces to order. Larger showrooms of the state chains are found in the same area and along the main roads towards Anna Nagar, K. K. Nagar and the bypass.

Thaali traditions

The thaali (also thirumangalyam) is the central piece of a Tamil wedding, and southern Tamil Nadu has many community-specific designs, from small pendants to large, elaborate ones. The thaali is strung on a cord or on a heavy gold chain, the thaali kodi, and some families later add gold coins, beads or other ornaments to the chain in a ceremony after the wedding. Because designs carry meaning, families usually order the thaali from a jeweller who knows their community's pattern.

Other common pieces are the kasu malai coin necklace, maanga malai, oddiyanam waist belt, jimikki bell earrings and temple jewellery with deity motifs.

Example: a 5-sovereign thaali kodi with wastage in grams

Madurai jewellers often express settharam as extra grams of gold, priced at the board rate, with seikooli (making) on top. Suppose (illustrative) the 22K rate is ₹12,180 per gram and you order a 40-gram (5-sovereign) thaali kodi with 7% wastage and making at ₹200 per gram:

LineWorkingAmount
Gold40 g × ₹12,180₹4,87,200
Settharam7% of 40 g = 2.8 g × ₹12,180₹34,104
Seikooli40 g × ₹200₹8,000
Taxable value₹5,29,304
GST3%₹15,879.12
Total₹5,45,183.12

You receive 40 g of gold but pay for 42.8 g plus labour. When comparing shops, convert every quote to a total in rupees for the same weight. The making charges guide explains wastage, and the jewellery price calculator handles percentage-based quotes.

Chithirai and other buying seasons

Madurai's biggest festival, the Chithirai festival in April–May, celebrates the divine wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar and draws huge crowds to the city; the surrounding weeks are a popular time for weddings and jewellery purchases. Tamil New Year, Akshaya Tritiya, Deepavali, Pongal and the Thai wedding season are other peaks. Aadi, avoided for weddings, brings VA offers instead.

Madurai buying tips

  • Ask whether settharam is quoted as a percentage of weight or of value, and confirm the final grams charged.
  • Check the BIS hallmark and HUID on the thaali, chain and every other piece (how to check).
  • For a custom thaali, agree the design, weight range and delivery date in writing.
  • If adding coins to an existing thaali kodi, get each coin's purity and weight on the bill.
  • Read what 916 means before accepting any "KDM" or older purity claims on exchange.
  • On a busy festival day, take the written estimate home and compare it with one other shop before paying the balance.
