Indicative rate = live international gold price in rupees (TradingView FX_IDC:XAUINRG) plus India's 6% import duty, before 3% GST and making charges. A jeweller's board rate can sit slightly above or below it. How we calculate

One rate for the tricity

Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula sit in three different administrations (a Union Territory, Punjab and Haryana), but gold is priced the same way in all three. The starting point is the international price converted to rupees plus 6% customs duty; GST is 3% everywhere in India, so crossing a sector boundary into another state does not change the tax. Most of the supply comes via Delhi wholesalers, and the Chandigarh board rate tends to sit very close to Delhi's.

Sector markets

Chandigarh's planned layout put its main shopping in sector markets. Sector 17, the city centre plaza, and Sector 22 have long been the main places to compare jewellers, alongside showrooms in other sector markets and in Mohali and Panchkula. National chains and older Punjabi family firms both operate here. Family jewellers are often willing to remodel old pieces and quote making charges flexibly; chains publish fixed policies on making, exchange and buy-back.

Still talking in tolas

Metric weights have been the legal standard in India for decades, and every invoice is in grams. But older customers in Punjab and Haryana often still describe jewellery in tolas, especially heavy kadas (bangles) and wedding sets: "a two-tola kada" is a common way to specify a piece. One tola is 11.6638 grams, which is why the table above includes a per-tola row. The tola guide explains the unit's history.

Worked example: a two-tola kada

Suppose (illustrative) the 22K rate is ₹12,300 per gram. Per tola, that is ₹12,300 × 11.6638 ≈ ₹1,43,465. A two-tola kada with 8% making would be billed like this:

ItemCalculationAmount
Gold2 tola × ₹1,43,465 (about 23.33 g)₹2,86,930
Making8% of gold value₹22,954.40
Subtotal₹3,09,884.40
GST3% of subtotal₹9,296.53
Total₹3,19,180.93

The invoice itself will show the weight in grams (23.33 g, give or take what the scale reads), so check the gram figure rather than relying on the tola description. Kadas and bangles are sometimes hollow or filled with lac to look heavier; ask whether the piece is solid and whether any filling is included in the weight. You can convert between tolas and grams with the gold unit converter.

Punjabi wedding gold

  • Rani haar: a long, layered necklace, typically the heaviest single piece in a bridal set.
  • Tikka or maang tikka and jhumkas: forehead and ear pieces matched to the set.
  • Kada: solid bangles given to brides and grooms, and often to children.
  • Kaleere: the dangling ornaments tied to the bride's bangles, now usually gold-plated rather than solid gold.

Karva Chauth, when many husbands give jewellery, and Dhanteras and Diwali are the busiest seasons outside weddings. Showrooms compete on making-charge discounts at these times; the gold rate itself follows the international market.

Selling gold in the tricity

Most jewellers buy back their own pieces at a published buying rate, which is lower than the day's selling rate, and test other gold for purity before quoting. Heavy plain 22K pieces such as kadas resell close to their gold value; studded or heavily worked pieces lose more because stones and labour are not paid for. If you are selling a large amount, ask two or three shops for a written quote on the same day, since the rate changes during trading hours.

Before buying in Chandigarh

  1. Check the BIS hallmark and six-character HUID, and verify it in the BIS CARE app. See the hallmark guide.
  2. Ask for weight in grams on the invoice, even if the piece was described in tolas.
  3. For bangles, confirm solid or hollow construction and any filling.
  4. Get making charge in writing and compare the rupee amount across shops.
  5. Ask the exchange deduction on old jewellery before agreeing a deal.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams is one tola of gold?
One tola is 11.6638 grams. Older customers in Punjab and north India often use the term, but jewellery is legally sold and invoiced in grams.
Is gold cheaper in Mohali or Panchkula than in Chandigarh?
The rate is essentially the same across the tricity. GST is a national 3% rate, so there is no tax advantage to buying in a particular state. Differences come from individual jewellers' margins and making charges.
Is the Chandigarh gold rate the same as Delhi?
It is usually within a few rupees per gram of Delhi, because much of the city's supply comes from Delhi wholesalers.
Are kaleere made of real gold?
Most kaleere today are gold-plated or made from other metals. Solid gold versions exist; if you buy one, insist on a hallmark and gram weight on the invoice.
