The rate in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack

Bhubaneswar and neighbouring Cuttack share the same gold rate in practice. Both draw on the national landed price (international gold in rupees plus 6% customs duty), with gold usually routed through Kolkata and other eastern wholesalers. Local board rates then add the dealer margin. The live figure here is the reference before those local margins, so a jeweller's 22K rate a little above it is normal.

In Odia, gold is suna and silver is rupa. You will hear both at the counter, and many Odia families buy the two side by side.

Gold and silver: Odisha's two traditions

Cuttack is famous for silver filigree (tarakasi), fine silver wire twisted and soldered into ornaments, brooches and decorative items. Filigree is sold by weight plus a substantial labour charge, because the work is slow and skilled. For gold, Odia brides traditionally wear 22K pieces, and older designs include temple-inspired motifs. Some families buy filigree as gifts and gold as savings and wedding wear, which is a sensible division: silver filigree carries mostly labour value, while plain 22K gold holds most of its value at resale.

Buying a gold coin: what the premium looks like

Coins are popular for Akshaya Tritiya and Dhanteras. Jewellers and banks sell 24K (999 or 995) coins at the day's rate plus a premium for minting, assay packaging and margin. Suppose (illustrative) the 24K rate is ₹13,400 per gram and you buy a 10 g coin with a 3% premium:

ItemCalculationAmount
Gold value10 g × ₹13,400₹1,34,000
Coin premium3% of gold value₹4,020
Subtotal₹1,38,020
GST3% of ₹1,38,020₹4,140.60
Total₹1,42,160.60

Premiums differ widely. Small coins (1 g, 2 g) usually carry a higher premium per gram than 10 g coins or bars. Banks often charge more than jewellers and generally do not buy coins back, while many jewellers will buy back or exchange coins they sold. Compare the total cost per gram, and see gold coin prices for typical weights.

Where to buy

In Bhubaneswar, jewellery showrooms cluster around the Unit-II Market Building area, Saheed Nagar and the Janpath corridor, and the major national chains have stores in the city. Cuttack's older bazaars have long-established family jewellers and the filigree workshops. Pick a shop that will give a hallmarked invoice with the HUID and a written buy-back rate.

Festivals that drive buying

  • Akshaya Tritiya carries special weight in Odisha: it marks the start of chariot construction for the Puri Rath Yatra and is a traditional day for new beginnings and gold purchases.
  • Dhanteras and Diwali: coins and small ornaments.
  • Wedding season: the largest purchases, mostly 22K sets.

Coin, bar or jewellery

A coin is the cheapest way into physical gold because there is no making charge, only the premium. Jewellery costs more up front but is what most Odia families actually wear and pass on. If the purpose is saving for a wedding a few years away, some buyers accumulate coins and later exchange them for jewellery; ask the jeweller in advance whether coins bought elsewhere are accepted at full 24K value or tested and discounted. Paper and digital alternatives are covered in gold ETF vs physical gold.

Quick checks

  1. Coins: confirm purity (999 or 995), weight, tamper-proof packing and the assay certificate.
  2. Jewellery: look for the BIS hallmark with grade (22K916) and six-character HUID.
  3. Ask whether the coin premium or making charge is refundable on buy-back (it usually is not).
  4. Get a GST invoice listing weight, purity and rate per gram.

Frequently asked questions

Is the gold rate in Bhubaneswar the same as in Cuttack?
In practice, yes. Both cities draw on the same wholesale supply, and differences between shops are usually larger than any difference between the two cities.
Is hallmarking required for gold coins?
BIS hallmarking rules cover gold jewellery and artefacts. Coins from reputable sellers come with stated purity and are often BIS hallmarked or assay-certified. Ask for the certificate and keep the packaging sealed.
Why is the per-gram price of a 1 g coin higher than a 10 g coin?
Minting and packaging cost roughly the same regardless of weight, so the premium is spread over fewer grams on small coins.
Is silver filigree a good investment?
Filigree is valued for craftsmanship. Most of its price is labour, which is not recovered when you sell, so it is better bought as a keepsake than as savings.
What GST applies to gold coins?
3% on the full invoice, the same as jewellery. See GST on gold.
